Gardeners Enfield is committed to carrying out all gardening services safely, responsibly, and with proper care for our team, clients, visitors, and the public. We recognise that gardening and grounds maintenance can involve manual handling, sharp tools, machinery, uneven surfaces, weather exposure, and work near roads, driveways, and occupied properties. Our aim is to reduce risk as far as reasonably practicable and to maintain high standards of safety on every job.
Our commitment
We will take all reasonable steps to identify hazards, assess risks, and put suitable controls in place before work begins. This applies to regular maintenance, hedge cutting, lawn care, planting, clearance work, and one-off garden projects. We expect safe working practices to be followed at all times, and we will stop work if conditions become unsafe.
We are committed to providing and maintaining safe equipment, appropriate protective clothing, clear instructions, and suitable supervision where required. Safety is considered alongside quality and efficiency, and no task should be rushed at the expense of good practice.
Risk assessment and planning
Before starting work, we assess the site and the task to identify anything that could cause harm. This may include uneven ground, hidden obstacles, slippery surfaces, unstable structures, overgrown areas, manual lifting needs, wildlife hazards, access restrictions, or nearby members of the public. We also consider weather conditions, especially during strong winds, heavy rain, frost, or extreme heat.
Where a significant risk is identified, we adapt the method of work, use additional controls, or postpone the task if necessary. We communicate relevant risks to workers before the job starts and keep awareness high throughout the visit.
Safe use of tools and equipment
All tools and machinery must be used only by competent persons and in line with manufacturer guidance. Equipment is checked before use and kept in a safe condition. Defective tools are removed from service immediately until they have been repaired or replaced. Fuel, charging, storage, and transport of equipment are managed carefully to reduce the risk of fire, spillage, injury, or damage.
Personal protective equipment is used where needed. This may include gloves, safety footwear, eye protection, hearing protection, or high-visibility clothing depending on the task and the environment. PPE must be worn, maintained, and replaced when necessary.
Manual handling and work at height
We aim to avoid unsafe lifting by using correct techniques, suitable equipment, and team handling where necessary. Heavy loads, awkward shapes, bags of waste, pots, and materials are moved with care to prevent strain or injury.
Work at height is kept to a minimum and only carried out when safe access equipment is available and appropriate. Ladders, steps, and other access equipment are used correctly, positioned securely, and inspected before use. Where a task cannot be completed safely, we will find a safer alternative.
Site safety and public protection
We take care to protect clients, neighbours, passers-by, and property. Work areas are kept tidy, tools are stored safely when not in use, and waste is removed responsibly. Where appropriate, we use barriers, warnings, or temporary controls to reduce the chance of accidents. Particular care is taken when working near paths, entrances, vehicles, windows, children, pets, or busy access points.
We respect the condition of each garden and aim to avoid unnecessary damage to lawns, beds, structures, paving, and planted areas. If a hazard cannot be controlled safely, we will discuss it with the client before continuing.
Training, supervision, and competence
Anyone carrying out work on behalf of Gardeners Enfield is expected to understand safe working procedures and to follow them consistently. Training, instruction, and supervision are provided as needed so that tasks are completed safely and competently. We encourage staff to raise concerns, report hazards, and suggest improvements without delay.
Incidents and reporting
All accidents, near misses, damage, and unsafe conditions are reported and reviewed so that we can prevent recurrence. Where required, we will take corrective action and update our procedures. First aid arrangements are maintained where appropriate, and emergency procedures are followed if an incident occurs.
